Thermostat or Thermometer?

In your life, are you a thermostat or a thermometer? A thermometer merely reacts to the conditions around it. In contrast, a thermostat sets the conditions in the room.

Take responsibility for your life. If you don't like where you are DO something about it. Focus on the things you can control, stay positive, and live passionately.

Life is a series of choices. Closely evaluate what it is you really want. Dig deep. What is it at the very core of you that drives you, sustains you, fires you up, leaves you energized, leaves you fulfilled? Go boldly in that direction. You are whatever you choose to be.

Living like you mean it

A man practices the art of adventure when he heroically faces up to life; When he has the daring to open doors to new experiences and to step boldly forth to explore strange horizons. When he is unafraid of new ideas, new theories and new philosophies. When he has the curiosity to experiment--to test and try new ways of living and thinking. When he has the flexibility to adjust and adapt himself to the changing patterns of life. When he refuses to seek safe places and easy tasks and has, instead, the courage to wrestle with the toughest problems. When he has the moral stamina to be steadfast in the support of those men in whom he has faith and those causes in which he believes. When he breaks the chain of routine and renews his life through reading new books, traveling to new places, making new friends, taking up new hobbies and adopting new viewpoints. When he has the nerve to move out of life's shallows and venture forth into the deep. When he keeps his heart young, his expectations high and never allows his dreams to die. When he concludes that a rut is only another name for the grave and that the only way to stay out of the ruts is by living adventurously and staying vitally alive every day of his life.

We must dare to think 'unthinkable' thoughts. We must learn to explore all the options and possibilities that confront us in a complex and rapidly changing world. We must learn to welcome and not to fear the voices of dissent. We must dare to think about 'unthinkable things' because when things become unthinkable, thinking stops and action becomes mindless.

J. William Fulbright (1905 - 1995)

We pay a heavy price for our fear of failure. It is a powerful obstacle to growth. It assures the progressive narrowing of the personality and prevents exploration and experimentation. There is no learning without some difficulty and fumbling. If you want to keep on learning, you must keep on risking failure - all your life.

John William Gardner (1912 - )

Our deepest fear

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Quips

From here on out I think it best to post motivational quips. These tidbits, most often than not, may not be my original thoughts. However, the design is to inspire, motivate, and energize.

What ever it is you wish to do, do so with passion and integrity.

Small dreams are made by small people.

Dare to dream.

Dream big!

Find your passion and pursue it with all you have.

The Essence Of Discovery

Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance toward the summitt, keep the goal in mind, but many beautiful scences are to be observed from each new vantage point. Climb slowly, steadily, enjoying each passing moment, & the view from the summitt will prove to be astonishing.

NOW

Anxiety and stress often stem from things we cannot control, i.e., things that have happened and things that have yet to happen. The great thing about things that have already happened is that you cannot change the actual event, but you can change where you go from that event and how you interpret it. Most importantly you can learn from things that have happened. Life is a continual growing process marked by constant learning and personal growth. To learn nothing from where we have been would make where we are going mindless wandering. Conversely, stress and anxiety that stems from things yet to happen are easily relieved when a person considers that these things have not happened yet. In other words, the event or stressor has not occurred and may, or may not happen the way you are thinking about it, so why be anxious about something that hasn’t happened yet? To that end I argue that keeping a present state of mind helps to relieve much of the tension we experience in our daily lives. Keeping our mind in the NOW, we are able to focus on the things that are happening the moment they happen.

... and then I said

Well take ye a look at this. I dun found my password and login stuff so I can write in this here thingy. So I figured I'd start cranking out some stuff fer yuns to read, if'n you ont too that is.

I got me some good learning about stuff in the past few years, so I thought I'd share some of it. Not all cause I don't want to give any of this cow... or is it the milk, away for free when you can eat cheese....

What I was trying to say is that I thought I would post some junk from what I have been studying in grad school up here so you can read it, I can't give away all the secrets because in an ideal world I would charge a nice fee to tell these things to people on a one-on-one basis. Since the majority of readers of this highly inactive blog are my family, I guess I can give them some free stuff. Imagine that a Burka or a Whalen accepting something for free....Just disclaimer along those lines. You get what you pay for!! So set your expectations low for this blog and you'll be amazed by the mediocrity of the posts.
